From WWII Airfield to Thriving General Aviation Hub
Nestled on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, Wycombe Air Park—also known as Booker Airfield—has a rich aviation heritage dating back over 80 years. From its beginnings as a vital RAF base during the Second World War to its current role as one of the UK’s most active general aviation centres, the airfield has continually evolved while preserving its deep connection to the skies.

🛩️ 1941–1945: Royal Air Force Booker
Wycombe Air Park was originally opened in 1941 as RAF Booker, part of Britain’s wartime aviation infrastructure. It played a crucial role during World War II, primarily as a training base for the Royal Air Force. Operated under RAF Flying Training Command, the airfield was home to units such as No. 21 Elementary Flying Training School, where pilots were introduced to the fundamentals of flight.
Training aircraft like the de Havilland Tiger Moth were a common sight in the skies over the Chilterns, helping to prepare the next generation of RAF pilots for wartime service.
✈️ Post-War Years: A New Civilian Role
Following the end of WWII, RAF Booker remained active through the 1950s and early 60s, hosting both military training and Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve units. In 1965, control of the airfield was transferred to civilian operation, and it was officially renamed Wycombe Air Park.
Ownership was granted to The Local Council, who continue to lease the airfield to this day as. The transition marked the start of a new era for the site, with general aviation, flight training, and private aircraft activity becoming central to its identity.
🧭 Modern Era: A Centre for General Aviation
Today, Wycombe Air Park is one of the busiest general aviation airfields in the UK, supporting:
- Private and commercial flight training
- Aircraft maintenance and engineering services
- Avionics, hangarage, and fuel facilities
- A vibrant flying community with flying clubs, schools, and private owners
- Regular events, charity fly-ins, and community open days
As the licensed aerodrome operator, Booker Aviation continues to manage the airfield’s day-to-day operations—ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable activity for all users.
🏁 A Living Legacy
While much has changed over the decades, the spirit of aviation remains alive and well at Wycombe Air Park. From Tiger Moths to twin-engine trainers, and from RAF cadets to aspiring airline pilots, the airfield has helped thousands take their first steps into the world of flight.
We’re proud to preserve this history while continuing to invest in the future of aviation at Wycombe.
